Manchester clubs splash transfer market cash – but who’s got the best credit?

  • Leicester City tops the tables again after Premier League triumph
  • Manchester clubs are wealthiest but rank lower in terms of credit worthiness

On the eve of the new Premier League, Leicester City, the fairy-tale winner of the 2015/16 football season, has once again been crowned champions.

MadeSimple Group, the start-up specialist, has complied its own league table on the most credit-worthy football clubs of the 2015/16 season.

While the rival Manchester clubs and league juggernauts, City and United, top the table in terms of wealth, it is in fact last year’s Champions, Leicester City, which once again collects the top accolade.

Though Leicester City’s points total in the 2015/16 season left daylight between them and the nearest competitors, the title of the most creditworthy Premier League football team was a more close-fought battle. Its credit score of 93 sees the former minnows edging ahead of established clubs Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Manchester United by a mere point.

Similar to their usual Premier League performances, West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Liverpool sit mid-table while Middlesbrough, Sunderland and the season’s worst performer Watford languish at the bottom of table, with a Company Credit Score of just 31.

The Company Credit Score league tables draw on financial elements from a company’s filed accounts and other more current elements which are proven risk indicators. This includes CCJ’s, Trade Payment Data, Director history and performance and Group influence run through an algorithm to assess the “risk” of insolvency.

Companies are given a rating between 0 and 100 – the higher the rating, the better the score.

Howard Graham, CEO of Made Simple Group, said: “The positive experience of Leicester City’s recent title exploits has been mirrored in its creditworthiness, and it’s a glowing example of how the combination of success and trust could potentially lead to greater business fortune.

“Of course, takeovers and transfers, overall revenues and management will all play their part and have a greater effect on the overall view of these clubs. But the beauty of this system is that the credit scores change as a company experiences change. A company’s credit score is a worldwide system, used by millions of businesses every day when deciding who and who not to do business with, so why not shine the spotlight on the Premier League?”
