See how they see you… with a Company Credit Report

How does your business look?

Company credit reports can be invaluable when it comes to carrying out research on your competitors, partners and customers… but that’s not all.

Company credit reports are also handy when it comes to looking at how other people see your limited company.

It’s a bit like Googling yourself.

Depending on what company credit report you buy, you’ll be able to view an assortment of information directly related to your company. You can then act and improve on any areas that do not show your company in the best light.

Take a look at what information is included in each of our company credit reports.

Company Credit Report Update: Telephone Preference Service

Our company credit reports now include a field dedicated to the Telephone Preference Service.

What’s the Telephone Preference Service?

In their own words: ‘The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.’

Where and how is this information shown in the company credit report?

This appears on the ‘Base Info’ page (the first page) under the new ‘Telephone Preference Service’ field.

If a company is registered the following will show:

Registered with the Telephone Preference Service

If a company is not registered, this will show:

Not registered with the Telephone Preference Service

If you have any questions about this or anything else Company Search related, leave a comment and we’ll be in touch.

How can I find a limited company’s registered office?

Very easily! This information is freely available on the public register. All you need to do to find out a company’s registered office (this being the official Companies House recognised address for a company) is:

  1. Visit our homepage
  2. Enter the company name in the ‘Company Search’ box and select ‘Search’
  3. The searched for company should appear… along with the registered office address
  4. If you select ‘View Details’ you will then have the option to purchase a variety of company credit reports for that company

Why use Company Searches Made Simple? Here’s 5 reasons.

Why should you use Company Searches Made Simple? Well here’s five (of many) ways we can help your business:

To protect yourself if you’re looking to go into business with business partners or suppliers

Doing research on potential partners or suppliers is absolutely vital – especially for vulnerable smaller businesses where one slip-up can be damaging. A company credit report will help you pinpoint problem areas that should cause you concern.

Keep informed with your company’s credit rating

How do others see your business? Stay a step ahead and buy a company credit report to find out.

Monitor your competition

If you set up a company tracker against another company, you’ll be notified whenever said company files something with Companies House; appointments, resignations, annual returns, annual accounts and more.

Combat fraud

Similarly, set up a company tracker against your own company and you’ll be notified if someone is trying to make changes to your company, allowing you to act swiftly in notifying Companies House.

Get copies of lost company documents

Lost your Certificate of Incorporation? Misplaced your Memorandum and Articles? Accidentally shredded your recently filed Annual Return? Don’t worry, we can provide you with copies.

If a change happens within a company, how long until I can buy an updated company credit report?

How long does it take for a change to be reflected in a report?

As we’ve previously blogged about, company reports are not “live”. Once they’ve been purchased they remain static. If a change does occur to a company (our Company Tracker service notifies you in such instances!) and you would like to purchase an updated company credit report, we recommend waiting roughly 3 days from the change.

Do Company Credit Reports include industry information?

Company credit reports can include industry information if an annual return has been filed

They can do. If a company has filed an annual return, a company credit report will include the SIC code (Standard Industrial Classification code) for that company. This is a five figure code that defines what industry a company operates in. Company directors select this code when filing annual returns.

The usefulness of the code depends on how specific directors choose to be (multiple codes can be selected); some codes are vague (82990: Other business support service activities) whilst some are detailed (77351: Renting and leasing of air passenger transport equipment).

If a company has filed an annual return – you can check what’s been filed on the company details page – the SIC code will be displayed under “Base Information” on the first page of the company credit report:

Why do Company Credit Reports have an expiry date and Company Documents don’t?

Company Credit Reports expire after one year whilst Company Documents don’t have an expiry date

Good question. If you are an existing Company Searches Made Simple customer, you may have noticed that when you’re logged into your account, Company Credit Reports have an expiry date whilst Company Documents do not:

Company Credit Report

Company Document

Why is this?

Because Company Credit Reports are static once they have been purchased, any changes that happen to a company after a report has been purchased on it are not reflected in the report. To ensure that your account does not have completely outdated reports in it, we remove them after one year. Company Documents on the other hand do not date. They will always reflect a particular action in a company’s lifetime.

Think you’ve found a mistake in a Company Credit Report for your own company?

Let us know if you think something is not right in your company credit report

If you are the director of a limited company, it’s a good idea to buy a company credit report on your company to get an idea of how other people are seeing you.

Whilst we are wholly confident that the information in our reports are correct, if you do spot something that you think is incorrect, it’s important that you let us know what’s wrong. There’s probably a simple explanation.

For example, the most common reason for directors thinking that a report is incorrect is that they haven’t notified Companies House of a change in the company. Once Companies House are notified, new reports with updated information are then available.

Do Company Credit Reports Change?

Once purchased, Company Credit Reports are static.

In a word; no. Company credit reports do not change. The reports available on Company Searches Made Simple are correct and up-to-date up to the point that they’re purchased – they are then static.

For example, if you bought a standard credit or fully comprehensive company report now, and a director of that company resigned tomorrow, the report would still state that the director is a current director. However, if you were to buy another report tomorrow, the new report would be updated.

This is the exact reason why we give our company credit reports a one year shelf life (they are then removed from your account), otherwise your account would eventually include reports that are out-of-date.

We can however notify you as and when changes are made to companies via our company tracker service. You then know that an updated version of a company report is available.

See here for more information on our company credit reports and company tracker services.
